"Counterintuitive"

Tyler Durman, Author of Birthday Suit and Counterintuitive

Dads are invited to join us for this last event of the season!

Wow!  Here are the GEMs of Wisdom along with much gratitude to Tyler Durman for “Counterintuitive.”   Tyler is also the author of the poignant yet funny book Birthday Suit:

FRANK BUT FUNNY.    DADS JOINED US FOR THIS ONE.  WE FILLED THE ROOM.

Child-centric parenting is wreaking havoc in our families.

Sometimes us parents are lovingly misguided because we confuse love and respect.  We love our kids, but do they respect us?  Inconsistent parenting is damaging.  Maybe it’s time to apologize to our teen for being inconsistent.  Yes, apologize. Then remain humble and teachable and be open to doing a 180 in approach.  Establish clear boundaries and back them up.

We must let kids suffer consequences of their choices (early suffering is less painful than later suffering).

Consequences are more effective than lectures.

A teen's freedom should be earned.

Distrust is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's more effective and very reassuring to them when we remind them we have the same goals for them: INDEPENDENCE.
